Our first TY trip took place this week when we went camping at Loch Dan for two nights. The idea of this trip worried me slightly as it was my first time camping and I wanted to be prepared. I underestimated the rain that we received and I didn't pack enough warm clothing. Although I didn't get much sleep on this trip, it was an amazing experience. From being in charge of all our own meals, doing a 22k hike, and sleeping in a tent, I was taught about responsibility, perseverance and privilege. We had to have an element of responsibility while organizing the meals to be made and making sure to cook the food safely. When I found out about the hike that we had to complete, originally I was dreading it. However, it was very enjoyable as we were surrounded by beautiful scenery and when we finished I felt a great sense of relief and accomplishment. At night time when the temperature dropped and I had to sleep in my sleeping bag on the floor, I often found myself fantasizing about my bed at home. This experience made me realize how privileged I am to have a bed always waiting for me in my house. People all around the world live in far worse conditions without the shelter of a tent, a sleeping bag and food. Throughout this trip I have realized how lucky I am and the luxuries I experience every day. This was also a good opportunity to be able to meet new people in a more relaxed environment compared to inside of school. I grew closer to people while doing the hike, while making our meals, and when we were around the bonfire at night. I think that with all of the activities to come in TY, our year will grow a lot closer. It will provide us with many opportunities to mix with different people we may not see every day in school. My first camping trip was an experience that I will not forget any time soon.
