Enterprise Guest speaker: Sept 20, 2017
Today a guest speaker from the Student Enterprise Program in Wicklow came to talk to us about the organization she works for. She spoke to us about a competition for young entrepreneurs where they create a product or service and sell it. I already knew about this program from being in business class so it was good to learn about it in greater detail. My group in business class already decided that we wanted to make and sell bath bombs. However, after the presentation I think that our idea might not be creative enough. Despite our idea not being that creative it is important to recognize that we are making the bath bombs by scratch. The presentation inspired me to think outside of the box for future inventions. It also motivated me to successfully sell our product. This was a very informative presentation and I learnt a lot about the importance of new inventions and the process of selling a product.
Eagles flight workshop: Sep 21, 2017
Today we took part in a workshop called Eagles Flight for about three hours. In the workshop we were put into random teams to play a game. The goal of the game was to collect as much gold as possible in the mines, while making sure you had enough resources to make it there and back. This game required the teams to plan ahead of time, as we needed to plan out the amount of resources and supplies needed to survive each day. Rather than only working in our individual teams, the whole class decided to work together. This made the class stronger as we were trading supplies and sharing new information with everybody, which in the end earned us more gold. This game taught me that team work can be very beneficial when a group is all working together towards a common goal. It also taught me that the most important decisions you make when doing a project are the ones in the beginning. This is because these decisions will set you up on the right track which will make you more likely to reach success. I also learnt about the negative affects of procrastination. For example, if the teams procrastinated at the beginning of the task they would have failed to plan out their days which would have cost them a lot of gold, bringing down the class average. This can relate to when we are assigned a project which may be due in a few weeks and we decided not to start it right away. I enjoyed this activity because it was fun and it also taught me many lessons which will benefit the way I work in the future.
I.t is not for geeks
On September 29, 2017 two employees from DELL gave us a presentation about future careers in IT. There are often many misconceptions in the IT business about the skills requires. Also, there are less than half the amount of women to men. The presenters talked to us about the positive aspects of their careers such as traveling and meeting new people from all around the world. Although their are some more difficult skills required for these types of jobs, they showed us all of the fun involved. The work spaces have have amazing designs and facilities. They have pool and table tennis tables, x-boxes, scooters, and many more. Before this talk, I never considered IT to be a possible career path but now my opinions have changed. I might consider looking into a job in IT because it can provide me with many exciting opportunities. I could be an international worker which would mean that I travel to many new countries. Traveling is something that I would love to do in the future. I never really knew what I wanted to be in the future so I am glad to have more options.

Careers evening
On November 16 our school hosted a careers evening for 4th, 5th, and 6th year. I was happy about this event because I had no idea about which professions to pursue in the future. While there I visited people involved in film/production, Montessori teaching, fashion buyers, and physiotherapy. The profession that really caught my attention was film/production. The lady told us about how she go into the industry, the exciting projects she has worked on, the pros, and the cons. She said that the biggest con of the job are the extremely long hours. This is because when you are working on a movie sometimes you start filming in the middle of the night or very early in the morning. Apparently her job sometimes restricted her social life. However some pros where that she made many contacts, became very close with the people she works with, and she always enjoys her job as it is her passion. I believe that this type of job would suit me as I am more creative and would enjoy a job where the schedule changes from day to day. I am also quite good at multi tasking and I think that this is a quality needed for this type of job. I was also slightly interested in Montessori teaching as I love spending time with kids, I have a lot of patience, and I really think I would enjoy the job. However, the major obstacle in my way is that I do not do Irish. This would mean that I would have trouble teaching in Ireland but I could potentially still work abroad.
