For the past two weeks I got the chance to visit Jamaica, an island in the Caribbean where I lived for six years. I moved there when I was only 9 and left when I was fifteen, so I spent a large portion of my life there. It was amazing to go back to visit my friends and my old school. Most of my time was spent on the beach with friends in the sun. It was great to escape the Irish winter, finally get some heat, and try to get a tan. It was around 30 degrees everyday and after a while I actually began to miss the colder weather. In Jamaica there is a lot of poverty so it is important to try help the community. I decided to volunteer and a local orphanage for a few days which I used to help out at a lot. There, I spent my time playing with the children and babies and also feeding them. I really enjoyed helping at the orphanage because it made me appreciate how privileged I am. When in a country like Jamaica which is advertised for its amazing beaches and resorts, the poverty and issues of the country are often overlooked. While tourists usually stay inside of the resorts, they have no understanding of the culture that surrounds them. I loved going back to Jamaica for these two weeks and the craziness of the tiny island will be greatly missed. Even though most of Jamaicas wealth is made from the tourism industry, it is a shame that people only visit it for the high end resorts rather than its natural beauty.
