This week we took part in a martial arts course that took place over the course of two days. We had one mentor and I could tell that he was passionate about martial arts and self defense. We had a brief introduction where we learnt about the signs that someone is going to attack, and how to prepare for an attack. He also talked about some criminals in Ireland and the terrible crimes they have committed. This presentation made me aware of possible threats in my community. Then we went to the sports hall where we got to practice some basic self defense moves. I learnt how to block a slap, different types of punches , kicks, and how to get someone onto the ground. We practiced this a lot and I could feel myself improving as time passed. On the second day we focussed on ground fighting and how to approach an attacker with a weapon. I enjoyed learning about the different weapon attacks but sometimes I found the different techniques to be difficult. I am not that confident blocking weapons but with some more practice I think I could improve. This course definitely helped me to be prepared for any dangers/ attacks. Even though I do not think I would be able to get someone strong onto the ground, I have more of a chance now. After this course I feel like I could defend myself in a violent situation and I feel more prepared.
