Transition year is supposed to be a time in which our year as a group matures and gets the opportunity to take part in activities that are new to us. For the past six years I have been living in Jamaica where life was very different, so a big part of this year will be settling back in to Ireland. In St. Gerard’s I am doing some subjects that I have never studied before such as business, religion, and forensic science. Hopefully due to these new subjects I will get a better understanding about which profession I would like to pursue in the future.
With all of the extra-curricular activities and outings, I will be pushed outside of my comfort zone. This will be a positive thing for me as I will be taking part in many interesting activities which will give me the opportunity to get to know people better in a more relaxed environment. This year l will be taking part in ‘steer clear’, law, and the first aid extra-curricular activities. I hope that ‘steer clear’ will help me understand all the rules and regulations while driving which will eventually lead to me passing my driving test in a few years. Hopefully this course will help me to complete the written part of the test successfully. After completing the law and first aid courses I might discover that I want to pursue a career in these areas in the future.
I also would like to participate in the TY musical. I believe that this will be a good experience for me as it will help me gain more confidence. This will be a good opportunity to get to know people better. I used to enjoy drama class when I was younger but as I got older I lost touch with it. I enjoy drama and I think this play will be a lot of fun. I also enjoy art so I would like to help design sets. The musical will be unlike anything I have done before so it will benefit me positively.
This is also a year where we are supposed to gain independence. This independence starts when we are in charge of organizing our own work experience and charity work. The job experience will be very beneficial as it will help me understand what life will potentially be like after school. I am hoping to get a job in an office environment because I believe that it would suit me best. I prefer a busy environment where there is always something to do so hopefully I will get to experience this. I would like to get work experience in a marketing company as I would like to learn about the process of getting a product branded and into the market and also more about graphic design.
For my charity work I would enjoy working with children. I have volunteered in an orphanage before and I enjoyed working with the children and babies so I hope to do something similar to this. I am going to volunteer for the Bray lakers once a week for my gaisce and also for a week for my work experience.
In St. Gerard’s the main sport for girls is hockey, a sport I have never played before. One of my major goals for this year is to improve my hockey skills and maybe try out some new sports. I hope that by the end of the year I will be able to notice an improvement in my skills. Another sport that I want to try is touch rugby, which I can play outside of school on the weekends.
Next week we are going camping and this will be my first time. The 22k walk will be challenging but it will be worth it in the end. I will use camping as the adventure part of the Gaisce which I hope to complete by the end of the year. To complete Gaisce I will have to take part in community service and practice a new skill. It will be a great accomplishment if I finish Gaisce successfully.
I have high expectations for transition year and I think it will offer me many new and exciting opportunities. My biggest expectation for this year is to try many new activities and take part in a lot of community service which will better me as a person.
